RARE
DUTCH DELFT BLUE & WHITE MAIOLICA SYRUP JAR (WET DRUG
JAR) C.1675
|
|
-
|
|
|
|
|
- "A
very rare blue and white Dutch maiolica syrup jar with delicate rope
twist loop to spout and lip of jar. The Ming-style decoration, in two
shades of blue, imitates earlier Dutch imports of Chinese Ming style
decorative porcelain. This fabulous syrup jar shape borrows directly
from the work and influence of late 15th and early 16th century Italian
maiolica potters - notably from Faenza near Florence. This
distinctive style and decoration of Delft syrup jar appears unrecorded
in any literature."
Antiques
Expert Hamilton Bear.
-
- References:
Italian potters migrated to the Low Countries
in the
first half of the 16th century and continued to pot familiar shapes and
styles. At Antwerp syrup jars of this shape have been recorded produced
by Italian potters. Occupation by the Duke of Parma in 1585 caused
further relocation by these potters and their descendants further
north. The Italian potting tradition; exported in stages to the town of
Delft and elsewhere in northern Holland; came under the influence of
new decorative patterns from Chinese imports. Both shape of this syrup
jar and its decoration are the product of this complex evolution: at
the juncture of three important but entirely different cultures.
